Maybe you have been thinking about it for a while. You open a search, type something in, then close the tab again. You wonder if your problem is really big enough to bother anyone, or whether you should just carry on and hope it passes. If that sounds like you, you are not doing anything wrong. Most people sit with the idea for a long time before they ever say a word to anyone. So the honest answer to is counselling right for me is usually this. If part of you is asking the question, it is worth a proper conversation.
There is no rule that says things have to reach a certain point before you are allowed to ask for help. People come to us with all sorts. Anxiety that will not switch off, low mood, grief, a relationship that feels stuck, something from years ago that still has a grip, or just a heavy feeling they cannot name. You do not need a diagnosis or the right words. You only need to want things to feel a bit different. Counselling gives you a calm, private space to talk it through with someone who is fully on your side and will not judge you.
Feeling nervous about reaching out does not mean counselling is not for you. It usually means you care about getting it right. Some people worry they will be told what to do, or that they will have to dig up everything at once. Neither is true. You set the pace. You share what you want to share, when you are ready. A good therapist follows your lead and never pushes you somewhere you are not ready to go.
The first proper session is mostly a chance to get to know each other. There is no test and nothing to revise. Your therapist will ask a little about what brought you here and what you would like to be different. You can say as much or as little as feels right. Some people arrive with a clear thing to talk about. Others just know something feels off. Both are completely fine. By the end you will have a feel for what working together would be like, and you can decide where to go from there.
We see people in person at our practice in Teignmouth, Devon, and we also work with people right across the country and further afield by video call or WhatsApp. So you do not have to be local to work with us. We support people in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Bristol, Hampshire, the New Forest, the wider South West and worldwide online. Wherever you are, the same warmth and care come with it. Online sessions are private, easy to set up, and surprisingly natural once you settle in.
Counselling for Growth is Del and Sandra Wheeler, two integrative therapists with close to twenty years of experience each, and Katie Howard, who looks after the admin side and is usually your first point of contact. Integrative simply means we do not force everyone into one fixed method. We draw on several proven approaches and gently shape the work around you and what you actually need. You are a person, not a case.
Before you commit to anything, you can have a free 15-minute call with us. It is relaxed and there is no pressure. Think of it as a quick chat to see whether we feel like the right fit. You can ask anything you like, tell us a bit about what is going on, or just listen and get a sense of us. If it feels right, we book a first session. If it does not, that is completely fine too, and we will happily point you somewhere else. Either way, you have lost nothing and you are one small step further on.
You might recognise some of these. The same worry keeps going round in your head. You feel flat or tearful and you are not sure why. You are snapping at people you love. Sleep is poor. Something happened and you have never really talked about it. You feel like you are coping on the outside but struggling underneath. None of these has to be a crisis to be worth talking about. Quite often the best time to reach out is before things get heavier.
We will be honest with you. Counselling is not a magic fix and we will never promise to make everything perfect. What it does offer is real, steady support, a place to be properly heard, and practical ways to understand and handle what you are going through. Change tends to come quietly and at your own pace. Everything you say stays confidential, within the usual safety limits we will always explain to you clearly.
You do not have to have it all worked out before you get in touch. You do not need the perfect words. You just need to send a short message or pick up the phone, and we will take it gently from there. If you have read this far, some part of you is already considering it, and that counts for a lot.
Whenever you feel ready, we would love to hear from you. You can book a free 15-minute call to see if we are the right fit, or send us a quick message on WhatsApp if that feels easier to start with. There is no rush and no pressure. Reach out when the time is right for you, and we will be here.
